Mental health of Older Adults: How Can We Help Them Feel Cared for and connected?

Every year, October 10 marks World Mental Health Day, reminding us of the importance of mental well-being and its equal significance to physical health. As we strive to protect our own mental health and that of those we care about, it is essential to remember the psychological well-being of older adults in our communities, particularly in today’s rapidly changing world.

What Is Loneliness Among Older Adults?

As the years pass, some older adults may experience loneliness due to the loss of loved ones, fewer visits, limited mobility, or reduced social interaction. They may also find it challenging to keep up with rapid technological developments and changing cultural perspectives between generations in an increasingly globalized world.

The World Health Organization highlights social isolation and loneliness as factors that can negatively affect older adults’ mental health and quality of life.

How Can We Help Them Feel Cared for and connected?

We can make a meaningful difference by:

  • Making time to connect: Regular phone calls or home visits can mean a great deal.
  • Showing genuine interest: Give them opportunities to express their feelings and share their memories.
  • Including them in family life: Seek their opinions and involve them in family gatherings and daily activities.
  • Encouraging social interaction: Help them maintain friendships, connect with relatives, pursue hobbies, and exchange experiences across generations.
  • Supporting their hobbies: Encourage activities such as drawing, walking, knitting, and other crafts, and take part in these activities with them.
  • Providing appropriate support: Trusted home care and companionship services can help meet daily needs and strengthen their sense of care and belonging.

At Rawad Care, we believe that care goes beyond meeting daily needs. It is about showing compassion, preserving dignity, and fostering a sense of security and belonging.

Let us make caring for older adults a daily commitment, not just an occasion to remember.
